Both look up a word the moment you select it, both do it for free, and both are open source. Saladict puts 22 dictionaries, Cambridge, Collins, Longman and more, in one panel, so you can compare authoritative definitions. Read Frog has AI read the sentence the word sits in and gives you the one sense that fits, then saves it to a notebase it reviews with FSRS. Bilingual web pages and dual video subtitles come with Read Frog too; Pro is $3 a month.
Select a word, get the meaning in this sentence
Select a word or phrase and click Dictionary on the selection toolbar. The card shows the base form, pronunciation, part of speech and CEFR level, then the one definition that fits the sentence in front of you, with that sentence and its translation below, and both can be read aloud. When a long sentence does not parse, run Sentence Analysis instead and the main clause, subordinate clauses and tricky spots are marked on the sentence itself. Both actions run free on the built-in AI, or on your own OpenAI, DeepSeek, Gemini or local model.

What Read Frog adds
Words you looked up come back
Saladict keeps the words you look up in a word book and leaves reviewing to Anki. Read Frog does that step in the same place:
- After a lookup, save the dictionary card to Notebase in one click, with the sentence and its translation.
- Add a card template and every note becomes a flashcard.
- FSRS schedules the next review by how well you remember each card, with no export and no second app.
The same extension also turns whole articles into bilingual pages and puts dual subtitles on YouTube and Netflix, so your lookups are not limited to web pages.

What users say
It can translate pages, extract the main content of an article, and give detailed explanations of words and sentences.

It doesn't just do immersive translation — it also gives AI companion explanations word by word, sentence by sentence. Language learning effortlessly reaches the next level.

I watch anime and Japanese vloggers on YouTube, and finding Read Frog felt like discovering a whole new world! A fansub-level experience: Gemini is amazing at filling in what spoken language leaves out, and the subtitles come out natural and colloquial — goodbye stiff machine translation!

Frequently Asked Questions
If you have more questions, please contact us.
No. Read Frog's Dictionary is an AI action: it reads the sentence around the word you selected and gives the one definition that fits, with pronunciation, part of speech, CEFR level and a translation of the sentence. If you want the original definitions of several authoritative dictionaries side by side, Saladict does that better, and you can run both extensions.
Page translation, selection translation, YouTube subtitle translation, AI lookups and bringing your own API key are free. The free plan holds 10 notes with limited flashcard review; Pro and up remove those limits and include 300 minutes of AI video subtitles a month.
Yes. Both appear when you select text, so give one of them another trigger and they will not cover each other: Saladict can look up on double-click or while you hold Ctrl, and Read Frog lets you turn off toolbar buttons you do not use.
There is no import tool yet. You can export your Read Frog notebases to CSV at any time.
Not yet; PDF support is in the works. Until then, Saladict's own PDF viewer is a good way to read papers.
No, the two are published by different developers. This page compares Saladict, whose official downloads are listed on its website.
